Membership

The Institute for Health & Aging's (IHA) rich and lively community relies on the active participation of faculty, staff and external partners. Below are definitions of IHA’s community members' roles, responsibilities and benefits.

We are eager for YOU to join IHA. Read below to find the right entry point for you. 

Membership Categories

Core Faculty

Salaried academic appointees, fellows and postdocs whose primary appointment or employment is within the Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences (SBS)/IHA. Those moving to other UCSF departments may retain WOS/affiliated status if they continue working in IHA's key research areas.

Expectations

  • Lead research projects as Principal Investigators (PIs) in IHA’s priority technical areas. 
  • Identify as IHA faculty in publications, presentations and other academic products. 
  • Report project impact regularly to the IHA Director. 
  • Serve on IHA committees, participate in recruitment and contribute to governance. 
  • Engage in at least one of the following: 
  • Teaching, training or mentoring students and postdocs. 
  • Grant writing and management (pre- and post-award). 
  • Attending IHA meetings, retreats, seminars and events. 

Benefits

  • Access to internal funding opportunities. 
  • Eligibility for office space and workstations for research teams. 
  • Input on Institute strategy and participation in strategic planning. 
  • Featured prominently on the IHA website, newsletters and social media. 
  • Business development, grant writing and advancement support. 
  • Invitations to present at special events and meet with donors, scholars and leadership. 

Without Salary (WOS) Faculty

Researchers without salaried appointments at IHA including faculty anticipating funding through IHA and former Core Faculty who moved to other UCSF departments or institutions. 

Expectations

Participate in at least one of the following: 

  • Attend IHA faculty meetings, quarterly seminars and retreats. 
  • Collaborate on research or grants with IHA faculty. 
  • Teach or mentor within IHA programs. 

Benefits

  • Listed on the IHA website and linked to research endeavors. 
  • Research highlighted in internal/external meetings. 
  • Invitations to social events, seminars and special presentations. 

Emeritus Faculty

Previously Core Faculty who have retired from UCSF but maintain academic engagement. 

Expectations

  • Collaborate on research projects and support business development. 
  • Mentor postdoctoral scholars, junior faculty and students. 
  • Attend IHA-sponsored talks and seminars. 
  • Identify IHA affiliation in publications. 

Benefits

  • Continued participation in IHA events and initiatives. 
  • Inclusion in discussions about IHA strategy (non-voting). 
  • Recognition as Emeritus Faculty on the IHA website. 

Internal Affiliates

UCSF academic appointees, trainees or staff engaged in IHA’s key areas of research.

Expectations

  • Collaborate on research or training programs with IHA faculty. 
  • Attend IHA-sponsored events and meetings. 
  • Identify IHA affiliation in publications as appropriate. 

Benefits

  • Potential access to internal funding. 
  • Listed on the IHA website with links to research projects. 
  • Invitations to present at events, attend social gatherings and join IHA listservs.

Researchers from non-UCSF institutions contributing to IHA’s intellectual mission. 

Expectations

  • Collaborate on research or training programs with IHA faculty.

  • Potential access to internal funding. 
  • Listed on the IHA website with links to research projects. 
  • Invitations to present at events, attend social gatherings and join IHA listservs. 

Note: Expectations and benefits for external affiliates are the same as Internal Affiliates, except without UCSF-based appointments.

IHA Staff 

Staff are hired under IHA’s PIs in a range of technical and administrative roles.

IHA staff are an indispensable part of IHA’s community. We welcome staff to become active members of the IHA community as representatives on IHA governance and service committees. IHA offers centralized support in orientation, onboarding and staff development.
